National Ice Core Laboratory - Science Management Office

The National Ice Core Laboratory-Science Management Office (NICL-SMO) is located at the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans and Space, at the University of New Hampshire.

The NICL-SMO is funded by the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs (NSF-OPP) and serves as the primary point of contact for scientists interested in access to ice cores. NICL-SMO's primary role is the facilitation of the Ice Core Working Group (ICWG). The ICWG consists of members selected from the scientific community and investigates issues pertaining to ice core science. Their primary role consists of guidance to NSF and USGS on topics related to sample access, distribution, inventory, policy issues, operation and maintenance of the National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) and future directions for ice core research. NICL-SMO's goal is to assist scientists and the public with matters related to ice core science.

Important Information for Scientists Interested in Using the NICL Facility, Obtaining Samples from NICL Ice Cores, and/or Storing Ice Cores at NICL

The U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory, supported by NSF-OPP and the USGS-Geological Division, houses approximately 17,000 meters of ice cores recovered from Greenland and Antarctica that are available for study. Investigators funded by these agencies may access the facility's resources. However, investigators must contact the NICL-SMO Scientific Coordinator before submitting a proposal to the funding agency and must include details of expected usage of the NICL facility in the proposal.

You must contact the NICL-SMO Scientific Coordinator at least three weeks before you submit your proposal if you:
(a) plan on requesting samples from an ice core stored at NICL; and/or
(b) plan on collecting a new ice core and would like to store it (even just temporarily) at NICL; and/or
(c) would like to use the NICL facility for a core processing line or for other labwork.

Personnel from the Sample Allocation Committee will review your request and, if approved, provide a letter of support, which must be included as Supplemental Information with your NSF proposal. Investigators should familiarize themselves with the NICL Use and Ice Core Sample Allocation Policy.
